History and Culture
- AHPG855 Introduction to Coptic Art and Archaeology
This course covers the rich material culture of First Millennium Egypt, from church architecture and private houses to textiles, tombstones, and manuscript illumination.
- AHPG856 Egypt in the First Millennium
An overview of Egyptian society, economy and culture in the period from the Roman conquest of Egypt to about the year 1000. Topics such as natural resources, government and taxation, agriculture and trade, the structure of society, ethnicity, literacy and bilingualism (Greek, Demotic and the rise of Coptic), the growth and development of Christianity, and the fate of Egyptian Christianity in the first centuries after the Arab conquest are examined. - AHPG857 Monasticism in Egypt
An overview of the impressive wealth of monastic culture in Late Antique and Early Medieval Egypt by looking at the various forms of monastic life and the literature and the archaeological remains they left behind.
- AHPG849 Voices from Coptic Egypt (in preparation for Semester 2, 2008)
This course discusses the history of Coptic literature and gives access to the entire world of Coptic texts (e.g. saints' lives, sermons, monastic rules, magic, letters, wills) in English translation. |

Coptic Language
- AHPG896 Coptic I - Sahidic
An introduction to the Coptic script and language based on Sahidic Coptic. Sahidic boasts a rich literature of early Biblical translations, monastic writings, sermons, and saints lives. The course is taught in alternation with AHPG829, the introduction to Bohairic Coptic.
- AHPG897 Coptic II - Sahidic
This course continues AHPG896 Coptic I - Sahidic and enables students to read texts in the original. The course is taught in alternation with AHPG839 Coptic II - Bohairic.
Students having learned either Bohairic or Sahidic Coptic will have equal access to more advanced study of the language (courses AHPG898 and AHPG899).
- AHPG829 Coptic I - Bohairic
An introduction to the Coptic script and language based on Bohairic Coptic. The Bohairic form of Coptic is still in use today as the liturgical language of the Coptic Orthodox church. The course is taught in alternation with AHPG896, the introduction to Sahidic Coptic.
- AHPG839 Coptic I - Bohairic (in preparation for Semester 2, 2008)
This course continues AHPG829 Coptic I - Bohairic and enables students to read texts in the original. The course is taught in alternation with AHPG897 Coptic II - Sahidic.
Students having learned either Bohairic or Sahidic Coptic will have equal access to more advanced study of the language (courses AHPG898 and AHPG899).
- AHPG898 Coptic Dialects
The study of Bohairic and other dialects (Akhmimic, Lycopolitan, Fayumic, Mesokemic) gives access to the entire wealth of Coptic literature in the original.
- AHPG899 Advanced Coptic
This courses covers a wide variety of Coptic-language texts in Sahidic and Bohairic Coptic and introduces the history of Coptic literature.

Research Projects
- AHPG880 Documentary Project
A study edition, with historical analysis, of a group of selected artefacts or of Coptic documents. External options available subject to suitable supervision arrangements.

- AHPG882/883/884 Ancient History Minor Research Project
The units consist in a research thesis of 15,000-20,000 words. The prerequisites include completion of four half year units (16 postgraduate credit points) with an average grade of at least "Credit", including AHPG896 or equivalent. External options available subject to suitable supervision arrangements.
The difference between the units is merely administrative. AHPG882 is an 8 credit point, 2 semester unit starting in Semester 1 of every academic year. AHPG883 is for students who wish to commence a research project in the second half year. To complete the research project students must also enrol in AHPG884 in the first half-year of the following year. An incomplete grade ('I') will be awarded for this unit with a final grade being awarded for both AHPG883 and AHPG884 when the research project has been submitted and examined.
